Haemaru (Seongsan Ilchulbong), Jeju: Whole Hairtail Menu, Prices, Hours & Bus Directions

Haemaru (해마루) is a hairtail and sashimi restaurant at the entrance to the Seongsan Ilchulbong area, on the east tip of Jeju Island. These days it trades as Jeju Seongsan Haemaru & Ssamchongsa Hoetjip (제주 성산 해마루&쌈총사횟집): Haemaru handles the hairtail (galchi), braised or grilled whole, and Ssamchongsa handles the raw fish. Older listings call it the Seongsan Ilchulbong main branch. It’s on the second floor of a building on Ilchul-ro, right next to the Starbucks Seongsan DT, across from Gwangchigi Beach. This guide covers the menu and listed prices, hours, the Sunday closing, parking, and the bus. Practical details come from the restaurant’s Naver Place listing and its VisitJeju page, both checked in October 2026.

What kind of restaurant is it?

It’s a big sit-down place for families and tour groups rather than a small local diner. Naver lists group seating for up to 150 people (the menu mentions 180 seats for group bookings), plus high chairs, a waiting area, reservations through Naver, takeout and delivery. Most hairtail dishes are priced for two to four people, though there are a few one-person options.

Location is the main draw: the restaurant’s own directions put it about 3 minutes by car from Ilchulbong and 5 minutes from Seopjikoji, which makes it an easy lunch stop after the east coast’s morning sights.

The dishes, explained

  • Galchi (hairtail / cutlassfish): a long, silver, ribbon-shaped fish closely linked with Jeju. Tong-galchi means the whole fish, served long on a platter instead of cut into chunks.
  • Galchi-jorim: hairtail braised in a sweet-spicy red sauce. The haemul (seafood) version adds other seafood to the pot.
  • Seongge-miyeokguk: seaweed soup with sea urchin. It comes with the two-person hairtail sets.
  • Jeonbok-ttukbaegi: a hot stew with abalone, served in an earthenware pot.
  • Ttaksae-u: a hard-shelled Jeju shrimp, eaten raw here. The bigger order comes with ttaksae shrimp ramyeon.
  • Makhoe: casually sliced sashimi, the style of Ssamchongsa’s platters.

Menu and prices

The first list below is as listed on the restaurant’s Naver Place menu, checked October 19, 2026. Prices for larger tables and sashimi come from a menu board photo the restaurant posted on Naver in August 2026, so treat those as a guide. Check the menu at the table, since seafood prices move with the season.

Hairtail sets and mains (Naver menu list)

  • Braised hairtail, small + free whole grilled hairtail (갈치조림 小 + 통갈치구이 서비스) – ₩40,000

  • Ssamchongsa special set – ₩150,000
  • Whole mackerel sashimi – ₩35,000; winter yellowtail (bangeo) at market price

The same board lists mulhoe (cold raw-fish soup) at ₩18,000 and grilled tilefish (okdom) at ₩30,000. Neither appears on the Naver menu list.

What to order

For two people, the ₩40,000 braised hairtail with the free grilled hairtail is the cheapest way to try both styles of the fish. If you want the whole long fish as the centerpiece, go for the ₩60,000 grilled set or the ₩88,000 seafood braised set, both with sea urchin seaweed soup. Traveling solo? The ₩20,000 single grilled hairtail with a ₩12,000 seaweed soup, or the ₩15,000 abalone stew, are the realistic choices. Groups with mixed tastes can add a sashimi platter or the raw shrimp.

Opening hours

Naver Place lists the restaurant as open 10:00–22:00, Monday to Saturday, with a regular closing day every Sunday. VisitJeju also lists Sunday as the regular day off. No last-order time is listed. Some older directory listings give 09:00–21:00, so the hours have changed at least once. Check Naver Map on the day if you’re arriving early or late.

Timing tip: VisitKorea lists Seongsan Ilchulbong as opening at 05:00 in September–October and 06:00 from November to February. If you climb for sunrise, you’ll be done well before Haemaru opens at 10:00, so it works better as a lunch stop.

How to get there

Enter 84 Ilchul-ro, Seongsan-eup or the Korean name in Naver Map or KakaoMap. Look for the Starbucks Seongsan DT. The restaurant is upstairs in the building next to it, opposite Gwangchigi Beach.

By car

Seongsan is on the far east of the island, on the opposite side from Jeju Airport. Check the drive from your base in a map app, since it depends heavily on where you’re staying.

By bus

Naver lists the nearest stop as Gwangchigi Beach (광치기해변), about a 4-minute walk (roughly 250 m). Trunk buses 201, 211, 212 and 295 stop there, along with local buses 721-2 and 721-3 (722-1 and 722-2 on the opposite side). A VisitKorea travel feature describes riding 201 along this coast. Check live times in Naver Map or KakaoMap before you go.

Parking

Naver lists basic parking as free. It doesn’t give the number of spaces.

Practical tips

  • Sunday is out. Easy to miss if you’re touring the east coast on a weekend.
  • Reservations: bookings can be made through Naver. That’s worth doing for a group at lunchtime.
  • Drinks: Naver lists corkage as free.
  • Pets: Naver lists the restaurant as pet-friendly. Conditions aren’t spelled out, so call before bringing a dog.
  • Payment: Naver lists Jeju local currency (card, paper and mobile), Zero Pay and easy-pay services. It doesn’t say which foreign cards work, so carry a backup.
  • Budget: as listed, two people can eat hairtail for ₩40,000–₩88,000, and the sashimi platters start at ₩80,000.

What’s nearby

  • Gwangchigi Beach: right in front of the restaurant. VisitKorea notes its black sand, the moss-covered lava rock that shows at low tide, and sunrise views of Ilchulbong. It’s also where Jeju Olle Route 1 ends and Route 2 begins.
  • Seongsan Ilchulbong Tuff Cone: the UNESCO-listed crater at 284-12 Ilchul-ro, further up the same road. VisitKorea lists adult admission at ₩5,000, closed on the first Monday of each month.

Seongsan is a long way from both Jeju City and Seogwipo’s downtown, so where you sleep matters. Our guide to choosing between Jeju City and Seogwipo for a short food trip covers the tradeoffs. If you’d like to compare hairtail on the other side of the island, Haenyeo Three Sisters in Hallim serves similar whole braised and grilled hairtail on the northwest coast.
